Life Coach is a collaboration. Following Phil Manley’s 2011 solo debut, Manley set about writing a set of songs that he could perform live. After writing guitar, bass, synth, and vocals, he recruited his friend and former Golden bandmate Jon Theodore (The Mars Volta) as the drummer. With all respect due to Nick DiSalvo, who is incredibly talented, the proggy vocals are not what I love the most with Elder. What I love the most, I'll admit, is the incredible synthy, krauty goodness, from the track Sonntag on the previous album to the wonderful delving LP Hirschbrunnen. These instrumental Sessions were a major step in that direction, I think, and I love them dearly for it.
